Google Business Profile for Houston HVAC: The 4-Point Optimization That Adds 40 Leads/Month

By Tommy Premeaux

Google Business Profile (GBP) is the single most under-optimized lead source for Texas HVAC contractors — whether you're in Houston, Dallas, or anywhere in between.

Most contractors set it up once in 2019, never touch it again, and wonder why they stopped showing up in the 3-Pack.

Here's the exact 4-point optimization I run for every PrimoLocal client.

Point 1: Category & Keyword Alignment

GBP categories determine when Google shows your listing. Most HVAC contractors get this wrong.

Primary category: "HVAC Contractor" (not "Air Conditioning Repair Service" — that limits you)

Secondary categories:

  • Air conditioning contractor
  • Heating contractor
  • Air conditioning repair service
  • Furnace repair service
  • Air duct cleaning service

What NOT to do: Use "Home Services" as primary. Too broad. You'll get buried by actual HVAC contractors.

The exact keyword phrase should appear naturally in your business description, services, and posts. "Houston HVAC repair," "AC repair Houston," "HVAC installation Houston" — these should be woven in without keyword stuffing.

Want to see if your GBP is actually driving calls? Run the Tuesday Night Test — it takes 30 seconds and tells you everything.

Point 2: Service Area Precision

Most contractors list their entire state or "50-mile radius." That's a mistake.

Google ranks you for searches near your listed service areas. If you list a 50-mile radius, you're competing with EVERY contractor in Houston. If you list specific zip codes where you actually work, you rank higher for those exact areas.

Better approach: List your top 15-20 zip codes. The ones where you actually do work. The ones where you want more calls.

For a west Houston contractor, that looks like:

  • 77024 (River Oaks)
  • 77027 (Afton Oaks)
  • 77056 (Tanglewood)
  • 77057 (Galleria)
  • 77063 (Spring Branch)
  • 77079 (Briargrove)
  • 77080 (Spring Branch West)
  • 77094 (Energy Corridor)
  • 77401 (Bellaire)
  • 77450 (Katy)
  • 77479 (Sugar Land)

Don't list zip codes where you won't actually go. Customers in Rosenberg calling about AC repair don't want to hear you're "mostly in The Heights."

Point 3: Post Strategy (The Hidden Rank Booster)

GBP posts are the most overlooked ranking signal. Google wants to see activity.

Frequency: 2-3 posts per week minimum Content:

  • Maintenance tips ("Change your filter every 30 days in summer")
  • Seasonal reminders ("Schedule your tune-up before the July heat")
  • Special offers ("Free diagnostic with any repair in May")
  • Customer success stories (no names, just "a family in Katy")
  • Behind-the-scenes ("Our techs in The Heights today")

Length: 200-400 words with a photo CTA: Always include "Call (832) 737-0525 for emergency service" or similar

Most contractors post once a month. The ones in the 3-Pack post 10+ times per month. Google sees activity and rewards it.

Point 4: Review Velocity & Response

Reviews are the #1 ranking factor for local search. Not just quantity — velocity and responses matter.

Quantity target: 200+ reviews for the 3-Pack in competitive Houston zip codes Velocity target: 15-20 new reviews per month Rating threshold: 4.8+ stars Response rate: 100% within 48 hours

Here's the response strategy:

  • 5-star reviews: "Thank you, [Name]! We're glad we could help. Let us know if you need anything else. — Tommy"
  • 4-star reviews: "Thanks for the feedback, [Name]! We're always trying to improve. If there's anything more we can do, give us a call."
  • 3-star or below: "We're sorry we didn't meet expectations, [Name]. We'd like to make this right. Please call Tommy directly at (832) 743-2900."

Every response boosts your ranking. Every response shows future customers you care.

The Before and After

I optimized GBP for a Houston HVAC contractor in Memorial:

Before:

  • Reviews: 47
  • Rating: 4.3
  • 3-Pack ranking: #5-8 (sometimes below fold)
  • Leads from GBP: 12/month

After 90 days:

  • Reviews: 187
  • Rating: 4.9
  • 3-Pack ranking: #1-2
  • Leads from GBP: 68/month

That's 56 extra leads per month. At $1,200 average ticket × 35% close = $23,520/month in new revenue.

From GBP optimization alone. No ad spend required.

But GBP only works if someone answers when those leads call. Novo vs. a traditional answering service — here's why booking beats message-taking every time.

The 4-Point Checklist

Run this on your GBP right now:

  1. Primary category = HVAC Contractor? If not, fix it
  2. Service areas = specific zip codes? If you put "50-mile radius," change to exact zips
  3. Last GBP post = within 7 days? If not, write one today
  4. New reviews/month = 5+? If not, start asking customers today

If you fail 2 or more of these, you're leaving money on the table. Guaranteed.
